Why Commercial Chargers Need a Maintenance Plan
A domestic charger that fails is an inconvenience. A commercial charger that fails is a vehicle off the road, a customer who leaves a one-star review on a charging app, or an employee benefit that quietly stops working. Commercial units also run far more cycles per year than domestic ones, in weather, often unsupervised, which is why planned maintenance is cheaper than reactive repair by a wide margin.
Inspection and compliance
Annual inspection covers the electrical installation as well as the charge point: earthing and bonding, RCD operation, protective device ratings, enclosure integrity, cable and connector condition, and torque checks on terminations. The output is a certificate you can hand to an insurer, a landlord or an auditor. Sites that have claimed grant funding usually have record-keeping obligations attached, and this is what satisfies them.
Remote monitoring finds faults first
OCPP-connected chargers report their own faults. Monitoring turns that into something useful: an alert when a unit stops accepting sessions, when charge rates drop below expectation, or when a connector starts failing intermittently. Most of these are fixed in one visit if caught early and become a full unit replacement if left. Proactive detection is the single biggest difference between the Essential tier and the tiers above it.
Response times should match the risk
Choose a plan based on what a failure costs you. On Proper Care we call you back within 48 hours on Essential, within 24 hours on Professional, or within 4 hours on Enterprise. An engineer is on site within 10 working days on Essential, within 5 working days on Professional, or to an agreed SLA on Enterprise. A workplace car park with eight sockets can usually live with Essential, drivers use another bay. A depot where every vehicle must leave charged at 6am, or a public-facing site earning revenue per session, should agree an Enterprise SLA.
Firmware, back-office and tariffs
Maintenance is not only hardware. Firmware updates fix security and interoperability issues, back-office configuration drifts as tariffs and access rules change, and user lists need pruning as staff and fleets turn over. We handle these as part of the plan rather than as chargeable call-outs.
Estates we look after
Workplace car parks, van and HGV depots, hotel and retail destination sites, and multi-site portfolios where the reporting needs to roll up across locations. Plans start from £425 per site a year, with lower per-socket rates as the estate grows.
Installer gone quiet?
If the company that fitted your chargers has stopped answering, gone bust or stopped supporting the brand, you're not stuck. We look after chargers we didn't install. We start with a site audit: what's fitted, how it's wired, what state it's in and what it's connected to. Then we give you a plan to get everything working and keep it that way.
Switching your back-office software
Most commercial chargers speak a standard language called OCPP, so you're rarely locked in to the software that came with them. We can move your chargers to a back-office platform you control, including Fuuse, which we resell, keeping your access rules, tariffs and user lists.
